Ronen Bar Announced as New Shin Bet Head

Ronen Bar was approved by the government as the next head of the Shin Bet on Monday. Bar’s appointment will take effect starting on Thursday.

Bar, 55, is married and the father of three.

Bar has a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy from Tel Aviv University and a master’s degree in public management from Harvard University. Bar served in the elite Sayeret Matkal unit and afterwards joined the Shin Bet in the operations division.

As part of his many years of service for Israel’s security, he fought and commanded many operations in the Gaza Strip, Yehudah and Shomron, and in Lebanon. In 2011 he was appointed head of the Shin Bet Operations Division. In 2016, he was appointed head of the organization’s headquarters department and in 2018 he was appointed deputy head of the service, a position he held for the past two and a half years.
