Long Island: Man Strikes Two BLM Protesters With Car
A New York man was arrested and accused of hitting two people with his car at a Black Lives Matter march, authorities said.
Suffolk County Police said 36-year-old Anthony Cambareri, from Coram, was charged Monday with third-degree assault.
Police said Cambareri was driving a 2018 Toyota RAV4 in Huntington Station around 6:45 p.m. when he struck two protesters standing in the roadway, news outlets reported. The two protesters were taken to Huntington Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Witnesses said 25-30 demonstrators were marching east when the RAV4 struck the protesters, Newsday reported.
“In my head, I thought he’s going to stop, but he didn’t stop at all,” Chris McCain, 29, of Freeport. “For this to happen on Long Island is crazy.”
Police said Cambareri fled but was caught moments later. He wasn’t injured and his car was impounded.
It is unclear whether Cambareri had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
