Bombing Attempt Thwarted in Shomron

YERUSHALAYIM

Security officials arrested a Palestinian en route to an Independence Day terror attack at a checkpoint in the Shomron on Wednesday.

The truck he was driving was stopped by inspectors at the Reihan crossing, where a search uncovered a “powerful explosive device” hidden “in its roof,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The truck was carrying merchandise ostensibly intended for marketing in Israeli communities.

Police sappers were dispatched to defuse the bomb, the statement said.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman praised the security forces. “The vigilance and professionalism of the crossing authorities at the Defense Ministry led to the… thwarting of a major attack on the 70th Independence Day,” he tweeted.

“We will chase the [terrorists] who planned to attack on our holiday,” he added, vowing to bring them to justice.
