NEW YORK – It’s official: New York City tap water is the best for hundreds of miles around.
The city’s tap water bagged the top prize in the state’s Regional Metro Tap Water Taste Test competition Thursday, the Department of Environmental Protection said.
The contest was held in the American Museum of Natural History, where visitors tasted plain sink water from five regions — New York City, Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk and Orange counties.
The Big Apple took home the big prize. Their water will next compete in a statewide competition on Sept. 2.
“Generations ago,” said DEP Acting Commissioner Vincent Sapienza, “New Yorkers had the foresight to construct the incredible network of infrastructure that carries our water from as far away as 125 miles and provides us with a robust supply of high-quality drinking water from a pristine and protected watershed.”
The last time the city won the state title in 2008, besting 150 other municipal water systems.
