Assemblywoman Concedes Close Race, Handing Dems Four Seats
A New Jersey Republican Assembly member locked in a tight race against a Democrat in a district that includes Princeton conceded the race Monday, handing Democrats their fourth takeover of a GOP seat to pad their already-solid majority.
Donna Simon said in a statement that she conceded to Andrew Zwicker after ensuring no major irregularities were uncovered in the voting process. Republicans had been considering a recount but won’t pursue one.
Simon called the margin “razor thin” and said low turnout showed that voters were “disgusted” with lawmakers.
Unofficial results show Zwicker defeated Simon by several dozen votes.
The decision means Democrats picked up four seats in the Assembly in the Nov. 3 election. His victory brings the Democrats’ majority to 52 of 80 seats.
Zwicker is a plasma physicist who heads the science education department at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.
