Authorities Seize Fake Vehicle Inspection Stickers at JFK
Custom officials have seized more than 900 fake New York state vehicle inspection stickers during a luggage examination at Kennedy Airport.
They say the passenger, Luis Jose Cabral, had arrived on a flight from the Dominic Republic with 935 counterfeit stickers inside his sneakers and inside a photo album. Prosecutors estimated their value at more than $100,000.
They say the Dominican immigrant lives in the Bronx. He was arraigned on criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Prosecutors say the counterfeit stickers likely were intended for individuals who knew their vehicles wouldn’t pass inspection. If the scheme had succeeded, they say hundreds of unsafe vehicles could have been operating on the streets.
