NYPD to Change Policing Method For Pre-Dawn West Indian Fest
New York City’s police commissioner says there will be changes to the way officers police a pre-dawn party before the annual West Indian Day Parade.
Commissioner Bill Bratton’s comments Wednesday come days after an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo was critically injured after being caught in the crossfire between two gangs during the event early Monday.
Speaking on NY1 Wednesday night, Bratton said he would be “policing it very differently” with a more assertive response by officers.
In addition to the shooting of Cuomo’s aide, Carey Gabay, who remains hospitalized, a 24-year-old man was fatally stabbed during the festivities.
Police say another man was arrested in a separate shooting that occurred before Gabay was wounded.
Bratton says the violence takes away from the event’s cultural celebration.
