Dozens of Cars Damaged by LI Highway Pavement

PLAINVIEW, N.Y. (AP) —

Drivers whose tires were damaged along a stretch of Long Island highway after asphalt poured to fill pot holes washed away can apply for reimbursement.

State transportation officials say the asphalt washed away after a downpour Saturday along eastbound lanes of the Northern state Parkway between exits 36 and 37 in Plainview.

Spokeswoman Eileen Peters said the state will expedite claims and bear “appropriate responsibility” for the damage. Drivers can call 631-524-5741 to submit claims.

Work on the roadway began in mid-October and is to be completed Wednesday.

More than a dozen cars were stranded, some with flat tires, on Saturday night. A tow company said it changed tires and towed close to 60 cars.

Peters says electronic signs have been posted notifying drivers of the rough road.
