4 Men Plead Not Guilty in Deadly Mall Carjacking

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) —

Four men charged in the fatal carjacking of a young Jewish lawyer outside an upscale mall last year pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges.

Hanif Thompson, Karif Ford, Basim Henry and Kevin Roberts entered their pleas Wednesday in the Dec. 15 carjacking and killing of Dustin Friedland, 30, outside The Mall.

Friedland was returning to his car in the parking lot with his wife, Jamie Schare Friedland. The carjackers confronted the couple and shot Friedland in the head; his wife was unharmed.

The assailants drove off in the couple’s silver Range Rover, which was found the next morning in Newark, about 10 miles from the crime scene. Prosecutors have said the couple was targeted solely because of the make of their vehicle.
