Assembly Alters Calendar To Account For Shavuos

NEW YORK

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver announced Tuesday that the Assembly passed legislation  changing the date to sign designating petitions for the Primary Election in order to accommodate Shavuos. The original date to begin collecting signatures, June 3, 2014, would have fallen on Erev Shavuos. The legislation moves the first day of petitioning to May 29, 2014.

“This change, in recognition of the Shavuot observance, will help ensure that all interested New Yorkers may participate equally in our State’s political process,”  said Silver. “It is essential that we respect and accommodate the religious views and practices of all our citizens when it comes to our elections.”
