Cuomo Pushes Tax Break for Renters, Mostly in NYC

ALBANY (AP) —

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is supporting the minority position of his own tax commission when it comes to providing a property tax credit to renters across the state, with most of the break going to New York City tenants.

Including renters in his property tax-cutting plan along with home owners would strike a political balance that could get his proposal through the legislature.

Cuomo’s commission supported his goal of reducing property taxes upstate and in the New York City suburbs, where residents pay some of the nation’s highest taxes. A Cuomo spokesman said Monday that the governor will also push a tax credit for renters statewide.

Cuomo says it’s too early to say how much of a benefit renters could see in 2014, an election year.
