Jersey City Set to Open Mysterious Old Safes

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -

Two mysterious safes discovered in a wall of the Jersey City mayor’s office will be opened on Tuesday afternoon. City officials think they have been around for generations and mayors who have served over the past 30 years know nothing about them. Lore has it that they may have been used to store kickbacks from city workers to Mayor Frank Hague, who ran the city from 1917 to 1947.
