Big Name in Education Backs Thompson Mayoral Bid

NEW YORK

New York Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch plans to serve as chairwoman of William Thompson’s mayoral campaign.

Their association goes back to the 1990s when she served on the Board of Regents and he was president of the city Board of Education. Tisch’s support of the former city comptroller could boost his chances among voters concerned about city schools. Her family ties could also help Thompson raise money and allay the business world’s fears about the city’s economy under the next administration.

“Bill has a lot of integrity,” Tisch  said. “Everything that he always told me — although not what I always wanted to hear — I knew was 100 percent accurate and truthful.”

Tisch, a Democrat who was a high-profile supporter of Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani, said that lawyers she consulted saw no conflict between her state-level role and involvement in Thompson’s campaign.

While Thompson has been struggling to make a name for himself, his mathematical case is strong. He is the only African-American in a race which traditionally has black voters pulling the lever for black candidates.
