N.Y. Makes It Illegal for Vehicles to Pass a Garbage Truck

It is now illegal to speed past sanitation vehicles, under a law signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in August.

As of Tuesday, garbage trucks are reclassified as “hazard vehicles,” which are subject to the Move Over law. Motorists must slow down when passing waste and recycling collection vehicles with flashing lights.

The trucks in the new law are defined as any motor vehicle with a rear compaction function that is intended for the collection of refuse.

A violation of the law comes with a fine of $45 to $100 and can carry a prison term of up to 15 days.
