Education Minister Issues Ultimatum on Core Curriculum

YERUSHALAYIM

The new minister of education, Shay Piron (Yesh Atid), said in an interview with Yediot Aharonot he is bent on total withdrawal of state funding from schools that refuse to implement the Core Curriculum.

“You want money from the state?” he asked rhetorically, referring to the chareidi education system. “The Core Curriculum is the government’s condition. If you are not with me, I will take away the money,” he said in a blunt ultimatum.

Piron’s plan would require every institution to teach ministry-approved courses in English, math and civics.

Chareidi educational figures said in response that unfortunately, this condescending rhetorical tone has become typical of several ministers in the new government.

Chareidi education has passed through difficult periods before,” one menahel said. “Most institution directors withstood all the trials and tribulations, and did not give in to those who sought to destroy traditional Jewish education. So too, this time, with Hashem’s help, we will get through despite the hardships.”

He added that mechanchim are not seeking to take extreme positions, but “anyone who interferes with chareidi education would do well to learn from history. Though there were a few who caved in to pressure, the overwhelming majority proudly withstood the adversaries and waited for better times to come, as they always did.”

Piron said he was willing to negotiate the terms of implementation of the Core Curriculum before canceling any funding.

“I am interested in reaching an agreement on the Core Curriculum,” he said. But, he threatened, “the moment I feel that the talks have become an end in themselves and not a means, I will not be a part of it.”
