All agree that criminals and the mentally ill should be denied weapons as a practical matter, and that is the law universally. We could not expect the so-called expert (quoted in “Bump Stocks and Background Checks,” Hamodia, Nov 17) to know the Gemara in Sotah that a person doesn’t commit a sin without being mentally affected by a ruach shtuss. Yet the ultimate results should be the same.
The media and the Left (but I repeat myself) focus on obvious tragedies, and try to draw on the heartstrings with weak arguments about “the children,” because they really have no viable solutions. In a city like Chicago, a locale with the strictest gun laws in the country, hundreds have been shot and killed this year. By the numbers, Chicago has a Texas church-like fatality rate every weekend. Before Rabbi Shafran lectures us on our attitudes toward life and national policy, we should be presented with reasonable solutions for that recurring war zone.
Perhaps we will eventually get honesty. The Left wants to uproot your Second Amendment, and incrementally undermine it until that is possible. I’m not here to re-litigate your clear right to self-defense, so please keep in mind: when seconds count, the police will be there in minutes.
P.S. To Mr. Schiller: Legislatures and courts all around the country anxiously await your technical definition of “assault weapon.”
