Justice Dept. to Probe Jail’s Power Outage

BROOKLYN – The Justice Department asked its inspector general to review the Bureau of Prisons’ response to the heat and power outage at a Brooklyn federal lockup, The Associated Press reported. The failures at the Metropolitan Detention Center during last week’s cold spell left inmates shivering.

Western NY to Treat Opioid Overdoses as Crime Scenes

BUFFALO – Authorities in western New York have a new initiative to track opioid overdoses and treat them as crime scenes. U.S. Attorney James Kennedy said Wednesday that responding officers will log certain evidence into a database just like any crime scene.

IBM Plans $2B Expansion in NY for Artificial Intelligence

ALBANY – IBM plans a $2 billion expansion focusing on artificial intelligence hardware, The Associated Press reported. The Westchester-based company will create a center for AI computer chip development at the SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany. They’re getting $300 million from the state.

Pedestrian Taking Shortcut Underneath Truck Run Over

EDISON, N.J. – A man who took a shortcut by scooting underneath a parked truck was critically injured when the driver suddenly drove off, The Associated Press reported. The 30-year-old was dragged about 10 feet. The driver was stopped several hours later. He wasn’t charged.

School Evacuated Amid Odor; Teacher in Hospital

PATERSON – A school was evacuated Thursday morning after an unusual odor was detected in a classroom and a teacher was hospitalized, The Associated Press reported. Students at Paterson 10 were taken to another school.

Boy Who Fell Through Ice at NJ Park Dies

TRENTON – A 14-year-old boy who fell through the ice in a Trenton park Sunday afternoon died a few days later, The Associated Press reported. Zayquan Wheeler was playing with friends when a basketball rolled onto the ice of the Delaware and Raritan Canal. He chased after the ball and fell through the ice-covered water.
