Police have opened what they called an “intense investigation” over who is responsible for the abandonment of a one-day old infant in Netanya. The baby was found Wednesday morning, wrapped in a blanket and laying on the ground on one of the streets in the city’s center.

The baby was found by a passerby, who took the baby home and then called authorities. The baby was examined on site and taken to Laniado Hospital in Netanya. Police said the baby had been exposed to the elements for some hours, and it was suffering from hypothermia. Doctors said that the baby was in serious condition, but were hopeful the situation would improve.

A rescue worker told Yediot Acharonot that the baby was conscious when he arrived at the woman’s house, and that it was crying. “It appeared to suffering from hypothermia,” the rescue worker said. “I wrapped it in a blanket to warm it up, and we took it to the hospital.”

In a statement, Laniado Hospital said that the infant had undergone tests, and was resting in the hospital’s obstetrics department. Police said they had begun an investigation, and were not ruling out any possibilities.
