Upstate New York Mayor Admits Stealing Postage, Resigns

An upstate New York mayor has resigned after admitting he used City Hall’s postage meter for personal mail and then falsified records.

Dayton King pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of official misconduct Wednesday. He had originally been charged with a felony. As part of a plea deal, the 40-year-old King was required to step down as mayor of Gloversville, 40 miles northwest of Albany.

In a statement issued through his lawyer, King apologized and said he had used poor judgment.

King, who had been in office for nine years, has to pay back $473 in postage plus a $500 fine.

Thursday evening, the Gloversville City Council is expected to appoint one of its members to serve as mayor until a special election in November.
