New York City’s Department of Transportation said Monday that 50 new electric vehicle charging stations will be built, to be located at 13 municipal parking garages, according to the Gothamist.

Currently, the city has 186 such stations, however 103 of them are designed specifically for pricey Tesla cars.

The new stations, some of which may open by next year, will be “fast charging” units, capable of delivering enough electricity to power an EV for 90 miles after a 10-minute charge, the DOT said.

The plans, though announced, will still require a “final feasibility review,” carried out by the New York State Power Authority.

Of the 13 new locations, three will be in Brooklyn; in Brighton Beach, Canarsie, and Sheepshead Bay. Nine will be in Queens areas, including Flushing Rockaway Park, and Bayside, as well as one in the Bronx at Jerome Avenue and 190th Street.

David Do, head of the Taxi and Limousine Commission, told the Gothamist that he was pleased with the plan, as the charging stations are situated in areas where many cab drivers live, in preparation for the city’s plan to require all paid car services to be electric by 2030.
