Gas Prices Fall Below 2021 Average for Early December

Drivers are feeling less pummeled at the pump, as gas prices continue to level off nationwide, dipping slightly below national averages of this time of year in 2021, according to the AAA.

The average price of gas for the first week of December is $3.32; last year, it was $3.34. This is the first time since March that gas prices have fallen below the previous year’s average.

In New York, after rising to $4.30 in March and remaining in the upper $4 range through July, prices tapered down to the low $4 range in August, and have been shifting between mid-to-high $3 range since, according to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

Gas prices dramatically increased following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with inflation and residual Covid-related supply chain issues contributing to the rise in prices.
