In what is being investigated as a possible hate crime, a youth grabbed the hat of a Jewish pedestrian off his head in broad daylight and ran away with it, heading southbound on New Utrecht Avenue. After being chased for several blocks by Boro Park Shomrim, the perpetrator dropped the hat and escaped while his friend was apprehended and detained by Shomrim until the police arrived.

The incident unfolded shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, November 23 on Thirteenth Avenue. As the Jewish man was walking northbound between 55th and 56th Street, the young men approached from behind and one of them grabbed the hat. The group then fled and Boro Park Shomrim gave chase, catching up with one of them at New Utrecht Avenue and 59th Street where they recovered the hat.

NYPD questioned the detained person, who had ID on him, but released him when it was determined that he was not the person who grabbed the hat.

The incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime, and the NYPD is searching for the other people involved.
