BROOKLYN — A burglar was apprehended by Flatbush Shomrim Friday morning after breaking into a home and being found in a child’s bedroom, a day after worried residents had reported spotting him trying to break into homes in the area.

Around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Shomrim received calls from residents of East 26th Street between Avenues L and M in Midwood, reporting that a man was seen in several backyards on the block and trying to break into homes in the area.

Shomrim obtained surveillance footage and searched but could not find the man. However, due to these reports, Shomrim added patrols to the area.

Around 3 a.m. Friday morning, a Hatzoloh member leaving his house to do a Hatzoloh shift spotted the same man walking up a driveway, and called Shomrim. Sixteen Shomrim units responded to the area.

Suddenly, they heard a scream: the man had broken into a home intending to burglarize it, and had been spotted in a child’s bedroom. The family’s yells alerted Shomrim members, who quickly apprehended the burglar, and held him for arrest by officers of NYPD’s 70th precinct.

The suspect has been identified as Dan Costume, 31. He has 31 prior arrests, for charges including burglary, gun possession, criminal trespass and criminal mischief.
