NJ Costco Restricts Gas To Members

Known for offering below average gas prices, Costco will begin limiting access of its gas stations in New Jersey on Tuesday to members of its wholesale consumer club. Previously, non-members were able to buy gas but were not allowed to buy items in Costco stores without joining.
Costco stations typically charge $.25 less per gallon than other gas providers.
Originally suggested 18 years ago, Jersey lawmakers said at the time that the change would violate state law, but that stance has changed. “The practice of offering members-only gasoline sales does not violate any of New Jersey’s consumer protection laws,” Steve Barnes, a state Consumer Affairs spokesman told NJ.com last week.
Costco posted signs on June 7 that the restrictions would soon take effect.
