YERUSHALAYIM – A court in the United Arab Emirates has overturned a death sentence for an Israeli accused of drug trafficking.

The defendant, a 43-year-old Haifa resident, was arrested on March 17, 2021, after police found drugs in her apartment. She has claimed that the half a kilogram of cocaine was not hers.

Fidaa Kiwan’s defense attorneys Shadi Saruji and Tami Ullman praised the Abu Dhabi Federal Appeal Court ruling as “a humane decision, and a right one.”

Ullman told Kan news that Kiwan will be sentenced to prison in the coming days and that her defense team “will do everything to bring her to Israel as quickly as possible.”

The UAE is known for its strict anti-drug laws, but the death sentences are not rigorously enforced, and in many cases are converted into heavy prison sentences.
