Netanyahu Summoned to Appear at Meron Commission

YERUSHALAYIM – The state commission of inquiry into the disaster at Mount Meron will conclude its taking of testimonies with Opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu, who received a summons on Sunday to appear before it.

Netanyahu, who was prime minister at the time of the tragedy in which 45 people died, is set to be the 141st and final witness, according to Haaretz.

Some of the senior officials and ministers who have testified in recent months alleged that Netanyahu was involved in the decision not to restrict the number of people allowed access to the site, Haaretz said.

The former prime minister was asked to come in person to a hearing on July 10, after  testimony from Meir Ben-Shabbat, national security adviser at the time of the disaster, and the director of the 2022 festivities, Tzvi Tessler. A recording leaked to Channel 13 news and aired earlier this month indicated that a number of planning and safety officials expressed serious concerns over the safety of visitors amid massive overcrowding days before the deadly crush.
