Sullivan County police are preparing for a greater-than-usual amount of summer travelers, especially in places like Monticello, where throngs of people – mostly frum Jews – migrate from New York City and its surrounding areas to bungalows, summer homes and hotels in the Catskills region every year. Due to the rising price of gas, more people are expected to make Monticello their summer destination, as it is closer to the city than most other Catskills spots.

Police Undersheriff Eric Chaboty said that in light of recent mass shootings, the police department is ramping up security. “We are looking at what happened in Buffalo, we are looking at what happened in Texas and other places and we are learning the lessons from those and seeing what we can do,” he told Mid-Hudson News. “Police can’t be everywhere at every moment, but we can do a lot to mitigate a potential situation,” he said.

He expects nearly 160,000 people to move into Sullivan County this summer.
