Starting June 1st, drivers in New York will not have to pay most taxes on gas, as Governor Kathy Hochul’s suspension of gas taxes will take effect. The plan was announced on April 19th, in an effort to curb the soaring price at the pump, and will last until December 31th, 2022. Gas prices have risen since then – the average cost of gas in New York as of May 31 is $4.93, up from $4.21 last month – but the price drop will still be a welcomed change.

Drivers can expect to see $.16 per gallon shaved off of their purchases. Some counties will retain their self-imposed sales taxes, including Nassau and Rockland, which have a $.08 sales tax.
