YERUSHALAYIM –The Israeli military is planning a major training exercise involving a simulated strike on Iran, to be held in Cyprus later this month, according to media reports on Tuesday.

U.S. forces are slated to participate, with refueling planes drilling alongside Israeli planes, according to Channel 13 news. Refueling capability has long been acknowledged to be essential to reaching distant targets in Iran and returning safely.

Channel 13 defense reporter Or Heller noted that by including the U.S. in the drill, the two countries are sending a message to Iran that the U.S. is prepared to provide material support to an Israeli airstrike.

The operation was described by the IDF as unprecedented in scope, elevating readiness for the possibility of multi-front and prolonged war on all of Israel’s borders.

The Iran simulation is part of the ongoing, month-long Chariots of Fire exercise, which has involved thousands of IDF soldiers and reservists from the Army, Air Force and Navy.

A key aspect of the exercise will be testing out the recently-established multidisciplinary center under the aegis of the Operations Directorate, using digital and advanced AI capabilities to create a “target incubator” that produces hundreds of potential targets in a real-time, combat situation.

Meanwhile, Michael Kurilla, head of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), arrived in Israel on Tuesday, his first official visit.

The IDFG said the visit will focus on “the ongoing operational cooperation between the State of Israel and the U.S., maintaining regional stability and dealing with joint operational threats and challenges in the region.” Kurilla is scheduled to meet Defense Minister Benny Gantz and IDF chief Aviv Kohavi on Wednesday, and observe a military exercise from IDF headquarters.
