Harav Eliyahu Abba-Shaul, zt”l. (Moshe Yom Tov)

The Torah world, and notably the Sephardi community, was plunged into mourning with the sudden petirah of Hagaon Harav Eliyahu Abba-Shaul, zt”l, Rosh Yeshivah, Yeshivat Ohr LeTzion, on Monday morning. He was 70 at his passing.

The only son of Hagaon Harav Ben-Zion Abba-Shaul, zt”l, he was born in Yerushalayim in 5712/1952.

In his youth, he learned in Yeshivas Kol Torah in Bayit Vegan in Yerushalayim, and later at the Ponevez yeshivah in Bnei Brak, where he was noted for his learning and hasmadah. When he became of age, he married, tblch”t, Netzachia, the daughter of the late Harav Yehuda Mualem, Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshivat Porat Yosef.

After his marriage, he served as a Ram at Yeshivat Porat Yosef. Afterwards, he was appointed Rav in the Itri neighborhood in Yerushalayim. He also served as head of the kibbutz in Yeshivat Yakirei Yerushalayim.

He later founded Yeshivat Ohr LeTzion, named for the sefarim of his father, zt”l. The yeshivah is located in the Givat Moshe neighborhood of Yerushalayim.

After the petirah of his father in 5758/1998, Rav Eliyahu began to serve as Rosh Yeshivah.

He had extensive experience as Rosh Yeshivah, from the years he taught at Yeshivat Porat Yosef, and even earlier during his years in Yeshivas Ponevez. He was known for his clear shiurim in which he would wisely combine the two ways of learning, in the spirit of his father.

He is survived by, lhbch”l, his wife, children and many grandchildren, following in his illustrious ways of Torah and yirah.
