NYC Plastic Straw Restrictions Implemented

Starting Monday, New York City eateries will only provide single-use plastic straws or stirrers if the customer specifically requests it.

Establishments can continue to provide straws and stirrers that are made of other, more environmentally friendly materials such as paper or wood.

These restrictions do not apply to items that come with straws attached by the manufacturer, such as juice boxes.

Affected businesses have a one-year warning period through October 31, 2022. Starting November 1, 2022, businesses will face a $100 fine for the first offense, a $200 fine for the second offense. and $400 each for any further offenses.

Businesses would face compliance inspection by the NYC Department of Sanitation and the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection as part of broader annual inspections.
