Carl Heastie, the New York Assembly Speaker, has tested positive for COVID-19.

On social media, Heastie said he was “experiencing only extremely mild symptoms. I am in frequent contact with my physician and look forward to a full recovery.”

Heastie received the first of his two coronavirus vaccine shots on March 6. It is unlikely but possible for people who have been vaccinated to become infected, and most of those who do, like Heastie, have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic.

Due to the state’s budget deadline rapidly approaching on April 1, Heastie will remain in Albany and work virtually from his home there.

“This is a reminder to everyone that we must continue to be vigilant,” Heastie concluded. “Wear a mask, wash your hands, practice social distancing and get tested if you are feeling any symptoms.”
