Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei denied on Wednesday that a poster he publicized earlier on social media which calls for freeing Palestine through a “final solution” was anti-Semitic.

Khamenei explained in an online posting that he’s not calling for the annihilation of the Jews, just the state of Israel. Or, as he puts it, “the Zionist regime.” He adds, “It will happen.”

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had responded that “Khamenei’s threats to implement the ‘Final Solution’ against Israel are reminiscent of the Nazi “Final Solution” plan for the destruction of the Jewish people. He must know that any regime that threatens Israel with extermination will find itself in similar danger,” Netanyahu wrote on Twitter.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denounced Khamenei’s use of the “final solution” phrase.

“The United States condemns Supreme Leader Khamenei’s disgusting and hateful anti-Semitic remarks,” Pompeo wrote. “They have no place on Twitter or on any other social media platform. We know Khamenei’s vile rhetoric does not represent the Iranian people’s tradition of tolerance.

“The leader of the world’s top sponsor of terrorism and anti-Semitism denies the Holocaust, sends money and weapons to anti-Israel terrorists, and now has invoked the Nazi call for the Final Solution.”

Turning to world nations, Pompeo asked rhetorically, “Is this someone who can be trusted with deadly weapons?”
