An elevator accident in a Manhattan high-rise apartment building has killed a man who was apparently pinned between the elevator car and the shaft.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, in a high-end rental building at 344 Third Avenue, between E. 25th and E. 26th Streets in the Kips Bay neighborhood.
Police and building inspectors are investigating. Police say that from the preliminary information they have gathered, it appears that the 30-year-old man, identified as Samuel Charles Waisbren, was trying to get out of the elevator when it continued going downward and trapped him.
Firefighters say other people in the elevator were helped to safety.
