Tunisia Issues Stamp With a Picture of a Synagogue In Honor of Lag BaOmer

Kan.org reported that Tunisian postal authorities issued a stamp bearing a picture of El Ghriba, the Great Synagogue on the island of Djerba, which is Africa’s oldest shul.

It is customary to visit this shul on Lag Ba’omer in honor of the traditional celebration of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, which will take place this week.

The island of Djerba, located in south-eastern Tunisia, is the center of most of the Jewish community living in the country. Thousands of visitors – Jews as well as tourists – are expected to visit the site, as they do each year.
