Push to Bring Back Two-Way Tolling on Verrazzano Bridge
Two-way tolling could be returning to the Verrazzano Bridge.
U.S. Reps. Max Rose, Jerrold Nadler and Nydia Velazquez on Sunday announced plans to introduce federal legislation to restore two-way tolling on the bridge after it was done away with in the 1980s to reduce traffic backups.
They say it would cut down on congestion and pollution on Staten Island and could lead to $10 to $15 million in additional revenue for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Under the current system, drivers are charged $19 to get onto the island if you don’t have EZ-Pass or Staten Island residency. The new legislation would instead charge out-of-towners $9.50 in both directions.
The cost for E-Z Pass users would remain the same except half would be charged each way.
