A warning from the Shin Bet of expected foreign meddling in the Israeli election were borne out recently by the hacking of Benny Gantz’s mobile phone by Iranian agents, according to Channel 12 News.

The report said that two Shin Bet agents met with Gantz five weeks ago to inform him that the contents of the device, including his personal information and correspondence, were captured by Iran.

The Blue and White leader was advised that he must assume that any sensitive item on the phone could be used against him in the future if he serves as a senior state official.

According to The Times of Israel, the agents said Gantz could “proceed as he sees fit, suggesting that no classified information had been on the device in the first place.”

Gantz canceled a campaign trip planned for Thursday following publication of the report.

Blue and White would only say that the timing of the disclosure, just weeks before the election, raises questions.

The Shin Bet would not comment on the report.
