Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to make New York City’s school zones speed cameras program permanent and more than double the number of schools covered.

The Democrat says he’ll include the proposal in the 2019-2020 state budget plan he’ll present to the Legislature on Tuesday.

The law approving the use of speed cameras in 140 city school zones expired last July after Republicans then in control of the state Senate refused to act on it.

Gov. Cuomo circumvented legislative approval by declaring a state of emergency late last summer . His executive order temporarily reactivated the cameras in time for the start of the school year.

Cuomo’s plan also would expand the camera program to 290 school zones. The devices are used to ticket drivers who violate speed limits near schools.
