Knesset Votes to Prevent Early Release of Convicted Terrorists

YERUSHALAYIM

The Knesset passed a law on Tuesday which will prevent the early release of convicted terrorists and other security prisoners.

The new law, proposed by Yisrael Beytenu MK Oded Forer and widely supported, passed its final reading by a vote of 27 to 6.

The legislation amends a recently passed bill to relieve pressure in overcrowded prisons by allowing the release of inmates who have served more than two-thirds of their sentences, except for security prisoners.

Some 700 criminals were released last week when the new government legislation came into effect, allowing the prison authority to reduce each sentence automatically.
