The IDF officer who was killed in the Gaza operation on Sunday gave up his life for his fellow soldiers, according to Channel 2 news on Tuesday night.
According to the report, after they became trapped by Hamas terrorists deep inside Gaza, Lt. Col. M., Hy”d, decided to leap from the IDF vehicle in order to draw the enemy fire on himself, thereby enabling his comrades to fire at the terrorists.
They did so, killing several terrorists, including a senior leader of Hamas’ military wing.
A second officer who attempted to rescue Lt. Col. M. was seriously wounded.
An Air Force helicopter then arrived to extract the soldiers from enemy territory and evacuate the wounded to hospital.
Lt. Col. M. was buried in his hometown with full military honors and with thousands in attendance, including President Reuven Rivlin and several Cabinet ministers.
