Cleanup Continues at Train-Derailment Site Along Delaware River
Workers are cleaning up after a train derailment along the Delaware River spilled diesel fuel into the water.
No one was hurt when the New York Susquehanna and Western Railroad train went off the rails last Thursday.
Authorities say two empty cars went into the river when the 63-car train derailed around 2 a.m. on Aug. 9 in the Delaware County town of Deposit.
The New York state Department of Environmental Conservation says a contractor has excavated soil contaminated by spilled diesel fuel and about 65 tons of soil will be removed this week and sent to a landfill.
Authorities say heavy rain and flooding caused a section of the rail bed to erode at a culvert overpass.
