Labor party chairman Avi Gabay announced Monday at the weekly faction meeting that Zionist Camp MK Tzipi Livni will be appointed the Knesset opposition leader.

Livni will be replacing former MK Yitzchak Herzog, who gave up his Knesset seat to become head of the Jewish Agency.

Although voted out as Labor chairman last year, Herzog remained head of the opposition. That was because the chairman, Avi Gabbay, is not an MK.

Gabay also said that Livni will preserve her Hatnuah party’s alliance with Labor in the Zionist Camp faction in the 2019 elections.

Livni, a former minister, said at the meeting that her leadership will create “a strong opposition and a strong alternative for Israel with the Zionist Camp at the center.”
