Crane Barrels Into Cars, Officer Leaps Inside to Stop It

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (AP) —

A police officer made a daring leap to stop a crane truck after the intoxicated driver smashed into four vehicles and sped off on the Long Island Expressway.

Suffolk County police say 47-year-old Brian Sinclair went about 9 miles after barreling through traffic around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday in Ronkonkoma. One car appeared to be mangled and crushed.

Police say Sinclair wouldn’t stop when the crane was surrounded by police vehicles. They say he only surrendered once Officer Joseph Goss got out of his vehicle and jumped into the crane truck’s cab.

Goss and three drivers were treated for minor injuries.

Sinclair was jailed pending arraignment Wednesday on charges of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.
