Fire Leaves Newark City Hall, Police Building Without Power

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) —

An electrical fire inside a Newark police building has left that facility and the city hall without power.

City Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose says the fire started shortly before 10 p.m., Tuesday, in an electrical grid inside the police building. It soon burned itself out, but also created smoky conditions that spurred evacuations.

Authorities say police operations were not affected by the fire and no injuries were reported. Both facilities remained without power early Wednesday and were closed to the public. Power was expected to be restored by Wednesday night.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
