NEW YORK (AP) —

Police say a 65-year-old Staten Island man died after he was punched by a stranger and fell onto the subway tracks in Brooklyn.

It happened at the Jay St.-MetroTech station Wednesday afternoon.

Police say an 18-year-old teen was talking incoherently when he approached Jacinto Suarez, who told him to back off. Police say the teen started to walk away but then came back and punched the man, knocking him onto the tracks.

Police say there were no trains and bystanders managed to jump down and pull the unconscious victim off the tracks. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner is to determine the exact cause of death.

The 18-year-old assailant remained at the scene and was taken into custody. Charges are pending.
