Mrs. Tovah Sheindel Shapira, a”h, wife of noted askan and former Agudas Yisrael MK Rabbi Avraham Yosef (Munia) Shapira, z”l, passed away Motzoei Shabbos at the age of 87.
She was born in Czechoslovakia in Kislev 5691/1930, to her noted parents Harav Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer-Schreiber, zt”l, the Pressburger Rav – a direct descendant and successor of the Chasam Sofer and Rav and Rosh Yeshivah of the Pressburg yeshivah in Yerushalayim. Her mother was Rebbetzin Esther. The family escaped the Nazis and moved to Eretz Yisrael in 5703/1943.
When she came of age, she married Rabbi Avraham Yosef Shapira, a scion of the Koritz dynasty. He was a noted askan, as well as a baal tzedakah v’chessed. Rabbi Shapira served as an MK for Agudas Yisrael and was a devoted shliach, utilizing his connections across the political sphere to help anyone in need.
Their house was known as a home of chessed, and a place where many political deals were cut.
He was niftar in 5760/2000, but nevertheless, Mrs. Shapira and her children continued the work that their husband and father had done. Over the years, the family established many yeshivos and mosdos named Darkei Ish – Ish as an acronym for Avraham Yosef Shapira.
Her brother, Harav Simcha Bunim Sofer-Schreiber, zt”l, Rav of the Pressburg kehillah in Givat Shaul, Yerushalayim, was niftar last year.
In recent months, Mrs. Shapira was hospitalized several times, ultimately passing away in Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital.
Her levayah will be held Sunday morning in Tel Aviv, and later in Yerushalayim, where she will be buried next to her husband.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Sarah Ludmir of Bnei Brak, her sons, Rabbi Yitzchak Yehudah of London, noted askan; Rabbi Pinchas, Rav of the Sadigura beis medrash in Tel Aviv; Rabbi Elimelech Shraga, Rosh Hakahal of Sadigura and Rabbi Shmuel Binyamin of Vienna; her daughters Mrs. Chavah Einhorn; and Mrs. Rochel Broker, both of New York, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
