BDE: Rabbi Chaim Ashkenazi, Z”l, Victim of Mexico City Earthquake
ZAKA volunteers in Mexico reported Motzaei Shabbos that they recovered the body of a Mexico City rabbi on the first night of Rosh Hashanah, The Jerusalem Post reported.
Working in coordination with the Mexican Jewish rescue and recovery organization Cadena, ZAKA said it had discovered the body of Rabbi Chaim Ashkenazi in the rubble of the office building he had been in when the 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck on Tuesday.
Rabbi Ashkenazi, of Kehillat Magen David, was a mechutan of Rabbi Shlomo Tawil, Chief Rabbi of Mexico.
ZAKA International Rescue Unit chief officer Mati Goldstein said that they worked throughout Rosh Hashanah and Shabbos in accordance with the guidance of Rabbi Tawil.
