Driver Using Phone Hits Cop Enforcing Distracted-Driving Law
A New Jersey police officer enforcing a statewide crackdown on distracted drivers has been hit by a driver using a cellphone as a navigation device.
NJ.com reports Howell Patrolman Michael Moore was driving a marked police car when he was struck by a car that failed to stop at a stop sign.
Howell police Chief Andrew Kudrick says the 80-year-old driver and his wife were taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries and the patrolman suffered a hand injury. He says “ironically Patrolman Moore was enforcing the statewide U Drive, U Text, U Pay campaign” when he was hit and the campaign flyers were strewn about his vehicle afterward.
The chief says an investigation found the man was using a cellphone to navigate and didn’t see the stop sign. The man will be issued citations.
