Trucking Company Owner Charged With $300K Toll Theft

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) —

Authorities say the owner of a New Jersey trucking company who owes more than $300,000 in unpaid tolls and fees for more than 3,000 violations has been arrested.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Joe Pentangelo said on Thursday that Jose Ramirez, of Jersey City, was charged on Wednesday.

He says that Port Authority police stopped one of his drivers headed toward the Lincoln Tunnel on Jan. 30 and impounded a truck for toll violations. Ramirez was arrested Wednesday when he came to pick up the truck.

Phone messages seeking comment left with the trucking company, and a number listed for Ramirez weren’t immediately returned.

Pentangelo says Ramirez owes $132,610 in tolls and $176,000 in fees for 3,520 commercial and passenger E-ZPass violations.
