The IDF completed its evacuation of area A of the Tira base at the entrance to Tirat HaCarmel near Haifa, the military’s central transit depot for decades.

The base, covering 57 acres, was handed over by the Defense Ministry to civilian authorities for construction of some 4,000 housing units.

The base had been the central clearing house for military supplies since the 1967 Six-Day War.

The evacuation, carried out by the Engineering and Construction Corps, entailed the razing of dozens of structures and extensive infrastructure.

Tira is part of an historic redeployment of IDF bases that will make available land for over 60,000 housing units in the north and central parts of the country.
